Getting to Martha's Vineyard
Part of any island's magic is that nobody arrives there by accident. Martha's Vineyard, six miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, is no exception. The Vineyard is not on the way to anywhere else - it's a destination, and one reason this place remains so beautiful is that it takes a bit of planning to get here.
Pay no attention to those bumper stickers on island cars that claim to be permits for the tunnel to the Vineyard -they're an inside joke. You'll have to cross the water by plane or boat, because no bridges or tunnels connect the island to the mainland.
The most common way of getting here is by ferry, and by far the biggest carrier is the Steamship Authority, a state agency whose fleet of nine vessels carries more than 400,000 vehicles back and forth from Woods Hole to the Vineyard every year. The SSA, as it's known, is the only carrier of cars and trucks, but if you plan to leave your vehicle behind there are quite a few other ferries to choose from. Competing boats leave from Rhode Island, New Bedford, Falmouth and Hyannis, but be sure to check their schedules, because some ferries run only in the busy season (usually May to September).
The Martha's Vineyard Airport, at the center of the island, has a new terminal and brings more people to the island every year. Air service to the Vineyard waxes and wanes with the seasons, but charter service is available the whole year around. And given that most high-profile visitors arrive here by air, the people-watching factor can make any trip to the airport interesting, especially in the summer months.
Some Driving Distances
- Woods Hole to Falmouth: 4 miles
- Woods Hole to Hyannis: approximately 26 miles (about 40-45 minutes)
- Bourne Bridge to Woods Hole: 20 miles (about 25 minutes)
- Boston to Woods Hole: approximately 75 miles
- Providence to Woods Hole: approximately 70 miles
- New York to Woods Hole: approximately 260 miles

Driving time from Boston to Woods Hole is usually about 90 minutes, but in the busy summer months that time can double. Driving time from New York to Woods Hole is usually around 4 hours, but is the summer months 6 to 7 hours is not unheard of.
